Job hunting in the modern economy is a strange beast. Finding a full time productive 9-5 gig ain’t what it used to be. You need to scour all corners of the globe, looking high and low, and be willing to work weird hours or overburdened jobs. There are some things you can do that will keep you going, though! The Nation’s Journal is here with some important tips for all the job seekers out there. Before you know it, you’ll have that big paycheck and that lavish corner office, on your way to bigger and better things.
1. I Spy
If you’re going to be looking for work. Make sure to check all over the place for any possible jobs. The internet is a great place to start. If you find yourself a particular set of jobs that you like, check other specialty websites in order to drive up your chances. Craigslist and LinkedIn are great, but everyone is on them. By going to more obscure websites, you’ll have less competition. Make sure you’re also applying to big brand stores on their specific websites, since they advertise less.
2. Are You Experienced?
Jobs like to hire people with experience. IF you don’t have any, or think you want more, try applying for internships as well. A good internship can make or break a budding career. There are internships available in all sorts of different fields. Print, media, sports, all over. Try to get an internship no matter what experience level you’re at. If you’re lucky, some are paid. Even if you’re stuck being the coffee jockey, make the time and effort to learn s much as you can.
3. Play the Field
If you think you know what you want to do, great. If you don’t, even better. The best way to find success is to try everything. Many many people in your life can attest that they never saw themselves ending up where they are. The important thing is to try to find your groove. You may come to a point where what you’ve always wanted isn’t what you thought it’d be. It’s never too late to change careers. Keep trying different fields and applications and methods. You might find you like being an ice cream man better than an analyst.
4. Little Engine
Don’t give up. Job hunting is a miserable experience made more miserable by the constant rejection. You may feel like the universe is constantly spiting on your face. That’s normal. You have to keep it up if you want to succeed. Take a job you hate in the mean time. Take some time to volunteer a few hours a week. Distract yourself by learning a new language or how to program. It’s just important to keep applying for jobs and to never stop looking. You need to keep a strong heart so you can be the person you’ve always wanted to be.
