4 Things the New Godzilla Movie Needs

Godzilla has been King of the Monsters for 59 years.  Since his big debut in 1954, people the world over have been huge fans of his destructive antics.  Like any good mythological figure, he’s been interpreted in quit a few ways.  He started off as a destructive force of nature, then as a defeater of monsters and defender of Earth by default, then into a full blown hero.  He was rebooted into a reluctant defender, and outright terror.  Now, his new movie set for next year is aiming to make him the biggest wrath of God force of nature yet.  Here’s 4 things his new movie needs.

1.  Scale
This Godzilla is one for the new era.  The first Godzilla was a personified threat of nuclear annihilation.  Science created him and science wound up defeating him.  He was 170 or so feet tall and a terrifying force to behold.  His threat was localized to one city.  Now, in the global world, we need a global sized Godzilla.  Early rumors peg the new Godzilla at 400 feet high, and the new trailer makes him out to be massive.  The bigger the threat, the more believable the menace.
2.  Monsters
There was a previous attempt to make Godzilla for the U.S. market, back in 1998.  The Godzilla there was, no joke, a mutated iguana who just wanted to lay eggs and fight the U.S. military.  It was a disappointment, to say the least.  The fact that Godzilla just ran around and hid didn’t help.  The new Godzilla film needs other monsters to show what a powerhouse Godzilla is, as well as the danger of whatever created all these monsters.  The brawling alone will bring in the crowds.

3.  Story
Godzilla films are all about the wanton destruction.  Crash, boom, bang all around.  The thing is, you can’t just make an entire film out of that alone.  It’d would get boring.  What’s needed is a good story to propel things along, so there’s context for the destruction on screen.  Thankfully, with actors like Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston on board, that’s seeming like it won’t be a problem.  A good cast will ensure that we enjoy the story unfolding on the screeen.
4.  Personality
Godzilla is a huge destroying monster, but he’s also a memorable character.  He needs a bit of personality to make him really stand out.  That’s part of what differentiates him from a simple dinosaur.  He’s got a method to his wrath and destruction, and he knows when it’s time to fight.  He doesn’t need to be as goofy as he has been at times in the past, but he’s rarely just a mindless machine.  Godzilla is a force fighting for Earth, and it needs to shine through to make the movie memorable.
