Wonder Woman is basically the most famous female superhero in all of history. She’s tough, strong, independent, and totally amazing. She’s a multifaceted character with an interesting history and a propensity for butt kicking and name taking. She’s been confirmed to appear in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film, played by Gal Gadot, opposite Ben Affleck Batman and Henry Cavill Superman. To make her work on the big screen, you need a few things to happen.
1. Self Determination
Wonder Woman, or Diana as she is mostly called in the DC Universe, is her own character. She historically comes from Themyscira, an island of warrior women, separate from the world of man. The reasoning for this varies over the years, from xenophobia on the island to ancient magic designed to keep men away from ever setting foot on the island. Diana needs to be a character introduced on her own terms, not an accessory to Batman or Superman in the film.
2. No Romance
Diana also shouldn’t be forced into a romantic subplot on her first outing. The problem with a lot of superhero films is that they feel obligated to include a love story, and simultaneously don’t always know what to do with female characters. Sticking them haphazardly into a romantic subplot doesn’t help. If there was ever romance, it would need time to breathe. The Marvel movies have shown us there’s no harm in waiting for payoff, so hopefully WB doesn’t rush.
3. Warrior Ways
Diana is a hardcore warrior. Unlike Batman, she doesn’t have a no kill rule. She doesn’t go out of her way to kill, but there’s nothing stopping her if it’s needed. She’s fiercely trained and practiced in literally dozens of different weapon types. The new film would do well to showcase here martial prowess, even if it’s in a brief way. As part of DC’s trinity of heroes, she needs to make sure to make an impression on movie goers. We were THIS close to seeing Ant Man in a movie before Wonder Woman, and that’s not right.
4. Politics
Diana is also the princess of her home island. In many representations of her character, she serves as ambassador to our world from hers. That’s a great place for the movie to start. To become ambassadress to our world, she had to earn it. She’s cunning and trained in diplomacy in addition to her fierce warrior skills. Superman is a farm boy and Batman is a grumpy rich kid. Diana is full fledged royalty with a position based on merit, and that’s something only she brings to the table.
