Unemployment, especially youth unemployment, is a major issue in America at this time. The effects of new technology and a slot to adapt economy have created a wide schism between the employed and the less fortunate unemployed. Many people in the nation, 7.3% according to the bureau of labor statistics, are looking for work at the moment. The number might be higher if you expand the criteria slightly. The worst part of job hunting is these parts.
1. Text
Job applications are designed to put you through the ringer. They figure, hey, you’ve got no job, so you’ve got time. If you’re not willing to spend an inordinate amount of time doing this application, you’re not worthy. Job applications ask you similar, repetitive questions over & over again. It wears one down over time. It’s like the boring pencil bushing of being a bureaucrat, but without the pay or dental benefits. Put on your reading glasses, bud, it’s a long night.
2. Competition
For every job you want, plenty of others want it too. You’re always in competition with someone. It’s cutthroat. Plus, the competition isn’t fair. The people in charge already have their employee in mind, regardless of stated criteria. You’re going through a do & pony show for the same reasons you filled out the boring application. The more willing you are to jump through hoops now, the more they’ll be able to dump on you later. Welcome to your life as a cog.
3. The New World
Work as it used to be doesn’t exist anymore. There’s no reason most office jobs can’t be done from home, except the office needs a way to manage how long your butt was in the seat. Modern tech lets a modern person do much more work much more efficiently than anytime in the past. This eliminates jobs, driving up unemployment, all because we’re getting too good at what we do. The modern world doesn’t need a work-yourself-to-death mentality, so it’s a shame that it persists.
4. Grin & Bare It
The absolute worst is that you have to take whatever you’re offered. You take the job you’re given because you have no choice. You don’t have the choice of what you want to do. you’ll start out hopeful and maybe apply for jobs you’d like, but before you know it you’re signing up for overtime in an underpaying environment with no benefits because that’s what you were able to get. You know you’re capable of so much more. That’s what you have to look forward to. Happy hunting.
